White Sugar Vs. Brown Sugar
In fall we use a lot of brown sugar when cooking and baking. So what are the differences between white sugar and brown sugar? Here goes the answer.
White Sugar Vs. Brown Sugar
The Differences
Color
White sugar is, of course, white and it contains white sugar crystals. And brown sugar contains white sugar crystals as well, but it also contains molasses which gives the brown color the dark color. There is more molasses in packed dark brown sugar (6.5%) than in light granulated brown sugar (3.5%).
Sweetness
White sugar is slightly less sweet than brown sugar. So, white sugar is slightly higher in calories by 3%.
Texture
White sugar is dry and grainy and brown sugar is moist and clumpy.
When Baked,
White sugar makes end result crispier, thinner, and lighter in color. In contrary when brown sugar is used, the end result is moist, denser, darker in color, deeper and spicier in flavor.
Brown sugar is frequently used for cookies, carrot cake, pumpkin recipes, etc.
